About us

Family run small farm raising poultry (chickens, ducks, turkeys, in 2015 geese!), rabbits, produce, herbs. We started small with cash and have grown, reinvesting funds into projects. We also help those in the community in need of a hand up (not a hand out) through sponsorships. Use mostly organic methods, not certified as it requires removal of valued animals if they need medical treatment. Heirloom and organic focus, all nonGMO.

Jan's Story

I grew up on a family farm in Illinois, and have worked in and around agriculture for all of my life. Several years ago some life altering events came about when my best friend passed away and her son came to live with me. We've scrambled with this project as a learning tool, a self sufficiency option and, in time, a means to help others with food that I hope to be able to at last support ourselves on. Although many make food choices that are not what we do, a big focus is heritage and heirloom varieties and breeds. It's what food used to taste like, and we're always trying to make it better. I started on a small town lot, which was paid off earlier this year. The opportunity arose to add two additional lots, with MUCH more sunny growing area, and a contract was signed for that, with payments started.

How your payment in advance helps

It's been a struggle to get funding because the vision is different. Many small projects including:

• Greenhouse hoop for starting plants in spring, and gardening longer in the fall.
• Increase shelter capacity for rare breeds of poultry using hoops, allowing for rotational outdoor pens.
• Perimeter fencing to keep roaming dogs and sticky fingered people from our hard earned produce.
• 15 5x10 raised beds, some fitted with removable greenhouse tops, some with other experimental options.
• Water reclamation system, including (if funds available) tanks, fish and a small aquaponics system.
